The Saguenay fjord
The fjord is a glacial valley with tides that can reach 6 meters.
The Saguenay fjord stands out with its diversity of wildlife and its length of 108 km between Chicoutimi and Tadoussac.
L’Anse-Saint-Jean, where Fjord en Kayak is located, is the village halfway between these two municipalities.
The fjord is bordered by 7 villages and the Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay. The waters are an integral part of the Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay.
During the Quaternary period (1.2 million years ago) 4 glaciations succeeded each other and carved out the fault that is now the glacial valley we know. These geological transformations have left cliffs up to 400 meters, plateaus and steep mountains that create a unique landscape.
The Saguenay Fjord is an average of 2 km wide and 270 meters deep.
At the mouth, along the village of Tadoussac, a glacier lock is created with a depth of 20 meters, which allows for complete oxygenation of the water in the fjord.
The surface water is relatively fresh and reaches in summer up to 18 Celcius. The fresh water that feeds the surface of the fjord takes its source from about 40 rivers and Lake St. John (40 km in diameter). This freshwater current flows over sea water which is much saltier and colder than the 4 Celsius Arctic current. The Saguenay Fjord thus contains a freshwater ecosystem floating on a seawater ecosystem.
Choice of rustic camping or refuge for kayakers or hikers. The park is integrated with the 7 riverside villages. Since 2015, a via ferrata is available from Rivière-Éternité.
Created in 1998, the Saguenay-St.Lawrence Marine Park is the result of concerted action by the governments of Canada and Quebec.
The mandate of the Saguenay-St.Lawrence Marine Park is to enhance the level of protection of the ecosystems of a representative portion of the Saguenay Fjord and the St. Lawrence Estuary.
