Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you are a regular or a neophyte of sea kayaking, you may have many questions for your activity at Fjord en Kayak. Sea kayaking is for everyone: children, even toddlers, kids, teens and adults. Depending on the activity chosen, your level of experience and endurance will vary. There is something for everyone with us, whether you come alone, with your family, as a couple or in a group.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions for our staff. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

Yes, but no… While there is a presence of whales in the Fjord of Saguenay, our sea kayak excursions take place in locations where whales rarely come to visit us. However, we will most likely see the nose of a common seal come out of the water and observe us quietly.

On the other hand, during our expedition in Tadoussac, your chances of seeing a marine mammal are much greater! It is very common to see the dorsal fin of a minke whale in the distance or to hear the blowing of a group of belugas in the evening at the camp.

On sea kayaking trips, we will cover a distance of approximately 10 km. For full day trips and more, the distance covered can vary between 15 and 20 km per day. Of course, this is an average and can be affected by the skills of the group and the weather conditions!

Yes, we will provide you with an anorak for paddling and clothing to keep you warm for the activity. Our outings in the rain are usually the most memorable! Yes, quite ironic indeed!

For an outing to be cancelled, there has to be a thunderstorm, very strong wind, huge waves…

We do everything we can to notify you as soon as we can by phone or email for any cancellations. We are however dealing with a marine environment where the weather can change very rapidly. We can sometimes be forced to make last minute decisions.

Of course! It’s entirely possible to participate in our activities with your own kayak. However, it must be a minimum of 16’, 2 waterproof crates, a rudder and/or a centerboard.

Unfortunately, no. We respect the minimum ages for our different kayak trips. The good news is that we have different types of kayaking trips to suit all age groups!

Unfortunately, no. Although we want to make sea kayaking accessible, the Saguenay Fjord is a marine environment that can quickly become hostile. This is why we only offer guided sea kayaking trips with one of our experienced guides.

Nevertheless, we offer lake kayak and paddle board rentals for a ride on beautiful summer days while staying in the sheltered area of L’Anse-Saint-Jean.

In high season, we have a very high number of visitors and our kayak trips are often full. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you make reservations before your visit to L’Anse-Saint-Jean to ensure a spot for a sea kayaking experience!

Fjord en Kayak will provide you with all the nautical equipment to ensure you have an exhilarating time: wetsuit, paddling anorak, neoprene booties, poogies, hat, waterproof bag for camera, etc. However, we recommend that you bring certain items to enhance the experience: swimsuit, snack, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, camera, sunglasses.

If you are participating in a sea kayaking expedition, we will send you a list of equipment to bring!

Our day trips and shorter are accessible to everyone. If you are a little fearful or less athletic, we recommend doing the activity in a tandem kayak. If you are more athletic by nature and enjoy a challenge, we offer to try solo kayaking.

For expeditions, we will take the time to evaluate your kayaking experience with you to find the right kayaking experience for you!

In the L’Anse-Saint-Jean area, the water in the Fjord can reach 18 ˚C in the summer and we can do the kayaking trips in swimsuits. However, when the water gets a little colder, we have all the necessary equipment to lend you to keep you warm.
